Tips and products to get your makeup to stay on all day AND night

Here are 6 ways to ensure your makeup will stay on all day and night.

1) Start with good skincare

Use products designed for your skin type. For oily skin use a gel or foam cleanser, a toner and mattifying moisturizer. Combination (oily t-zone, normal to dry cheeks) can use a gel or foam cleanser, toner and a gel or lotion type of moisturizer. If you have dry skin a milky cleanser, toner and a cream moisturizer will work. Well cleansed and moisturized skin is always the first step to a fabulous makeup look

Warning on SPF - If you are getting married or are going to be at an event where flash photography will be used, any product with an SPF including sunscreen is not a good idea. The SPF will create a white cast in photos. See my photo below,

Here is a picture of me in Vegas at a dark club with my blond friend Amberley. I use a foundation with SPF in it, when the flash goes off, my face looks whiter. Even though I am pale, I'm not that pale.

2) Use Primers

Foundation primer is AMAZING!! The silicone found in the product has a smoothing effect and will make wrinkles look less prominent and make pores appear smaller. On a normal day I do not wear a foundation, but if you put a primer on you will notice a change to your skin whether or not you apply foundation afterwards. Foundation primer will help you makeup last and will prevent oxidization on the skin to keep the colour of the foundation true throughout the day. I really like Smashbox Photo Finish foundation primer. You can find it at Shoppers Drug Mart and Sephora for approximately $45. It comes in a variety of formulations such as oil free, luminizing and correcting to help even out the skin tone.

Foundation primer will help keep your makeup on and create a flawless canvas, but for the eyes I like to use an eyeshadow primer. An eyeshadow primer will make colours pop and keep your shadow from creasing and fading. Urban Decay's Primer Potion is amazing!! I have tried numerous eyeshadow primers and this is by far my favorite. You can get it at Sephora for $24. It also comes in some different colours but I prefer the original.

 3) Use longwear foundation and waterproof formulations

Longwearing foundation is a must if you want your makeup to stay on all day especially in the heat and humidity. A luminizing or dewy finish will slip off the skin and provide less coverage. Long wearing products are generally matte finish (great for photography) and provide better coverage, generally moderate to full coverage. If you want to sheer out the coverage or are worried about dry skin you can mix a little longwearing foundation with your moisturizer. Here are a few of my favorites at various price points. Lancome's Tient Idole is by far my favorite foundation, it does contain SPF 15 so again it may not be the best choice for photographs, however if you are taking photos without a flash I love the coverage and the flawless look this foundation gives. It definitely lasts ALL day. $50 available at The Bay, Sears, Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart

A great drugstore option at a much more reasonable price but once again includes an SPF 15. Revlon Colourstay is a great foundation. I used to wear this on stage, it has great coverage but feels light and lasts through sweaty 90 minute shows. Costs about $15 and you can get it at most drug stores, Walmart and Target.

I usually do not use MAC products on the face. While I do love their studio finish concealer I find their foundations and powders a little on the cakey side. This foundation is full coverage and long wearing but the best part is that it does not contain SPF. It sells for $60 and is available at all MAC counters. Application with a duo fibre foundation brush like MAC #187 ($42) will keep foundation looking smooth and even.

Waterproof eye liner and mascara is important if you will be crying or if you have watery eyes. I really love gel liners like MAC's fluid line, they last forever. Look for longwearing products when possible to keep your eyes looking amazing all day!

For the lips, stains are great if you want the colour to last. Using a lipliner and filling in the lips with the liner will help keep your lipstick on. Matte formulations generally last longer on the lips then sheer or glossy formulations.

4) Carry Blotting papers

Blotting papers are a handbag staple and a must have if you have normal to oily skin. They are great because they remove excess shine so you don't have to add layers and layers of powder, which I can assure you will look cakey. After you have used your blotting paper, you can add a powder if needed. Just blot the paper in areas where you see shine, generally the forehead around the nose and the chin. I love the clean and clear blotters, they are cheap and effective. You can get them at any drugstore or Walmart and Target for about $8.

 5) Use a setting spray

A setting spray will keep your makeup looking fantastic all day long. A few spritzes will keep your makeup on and will help prevent shininess throughout the day. These are particularly great for hot humid days. Urban Decay De-slick makeup setting spray $35 at Sephora will keep your face from getting shiny.

I love MAC Fix + ($25). It is a multi-tasking product. You can use it as a refreshing spray before applying makeup. It can be used to set your makeup AND I love it for applying pigment (loose) eyeshadows. You simply dip your brush in the pigment, tap off excess pigment and spritz  the brush with Fix +. This prevents fall-out, makes pigments last longer and pops the colour.

 6) Last but definitely NOT least "BLOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD"

I actually say these exact words to every bride I work with. Time and time again I see brides at the end of the night with absolutely no makeup left because they cried (totally normal at your wedding, especially during speeches) and used a kleenex to literally wipe off all their makeup.

Brides, carry a kleenex with your bouquet or have one of your bridemaids carry one for you (or a few) and when you feel tears coming, get that kleenex and blot where the tears are coming out, never ever wipe. Wiping will remove all that beautiful makeup that you artfully applied or that you paid for! If you want to look good throughout your reception, please please BLOT FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!
